Logistics Department – Accidents

Drivers should report all accidents.  An instrcution sheet has been installed in all GALLAGHER trucks.  WE need to add a copy of it here.  WE should also have a folder that drivers take with them that they would reference when they are driving a RENTAL truck,

What to Do in Case of a Traffic Accident:

Immediately following an accident, stop and investigate what damage might have occurred to the vehicle.

  1. Call for medical aid if necessary
  1. Call the police, if necessary, (If damage is significant or the other motorist is not cooperative).
  1. Record names and addresses of drivers involved, witnesses, and occupants of the other vehicles.
  1. If you have access to a camera, take pictures of the damage to both vehicles.
  1. Pertinent information to record:
    1. License number of other drivers
    2. Insurance company names and policy numbers of other vehicles involved
    3. Make, model, and year of other vehicles
    4. Date and time of accident
    5. Other road and weather conditions
  1. Do not discuss the accident with anyone at the scene except the police. Do not accept responsibility for the accident. Do not argue with anyone.
  1. Provide the other party with your name, address, driver’s license number, and insurance information
  1. Immediately report the accident to your Manager or other Company representative. Provide a copy of the accident report and/or your written description of the accident ASAP.
  1. All accidents are to be reported immediately (during the same day, or as soon as practicable if immediate or same day reporting is not possible)
  1. Failing to stop after an accident and/or failure to report an accident may result in corrective action, up to and including termination.
  1. All Ticket violations received during the operation of a company vehicle must be reported within 48 hours.

Driver Safety Policy

The following policy has been established to encourage and enforce safe driving practices and to establish guidelines to ensure the safety of all employees. The policy applies to all employees who are required to drive on Company business.  It is intended to promote and ensure the safe operation of Company-owned vehicles, personally owned vehicles used for Company business and vehicles rented or leased at Company expense. Failure to adhere to these procedures may result in disciplinary action up to and including termination.

  • Employees will maintain a valid driver’s license. Employees must comply with any and all restrictions as noted on their driver’s license.
  • Driving on company business and/or driving a company vehicle while under the influence of intoxicants and other drugs is prohibited and is sufficient cause for corrective action, up to an including termination.
  • Cell phone use while driving is prohibited. Whenever possible, drivers should complete calls while the vehicle is parked and/or use the phone in a “hands free” mode via headset or speaker. While driving, attention to the road and safety should always take precedence over conducting business over the phone.
  • No driver shall operate a company vehicle when his ability to do so safely has been impaired by illness, fatigue, injury or prescription medication
  • All drivers and passengers operating or riding in a company vehicle MUST wear seat belts.
  • No unauthorized personnel are allowed to ride in company vehicles
  • Use of Company vehicles for personal use is not permitted. This includes using Company vehicles for personal use on or off-duty, as well as transporting non-employees in Company vehicles or employees who do not have a business purpose to be in a Company vehicle.
  • Drivers are responsible for the security of company vehicles assigned to them. The vehicle engine must be shut off, ignition keys removed, and vehicle doors locked whenever the vehicle is left unattended.
  • Employees are required to follow all federal and state specific motor vehicle laws, regulations, ordinances, etc. which are applicable when they are driving.
  • The use, possession, distribution or sale of controlled substances such as drugs or alcohol, or being under the influence of such controlled substances is strictly prohibited while on duty, while on the Company’s premises or worksites, or while operating the Company’s equipment or vehicles and/or driving for the purpose of conducting Company business.
  • Smoking is strongly discouraged in Company vehicles.  Currently this is not specifically prohibited, however this is a policy change that will take effect in the future.  It is, however, prohibited to smoke in any company vehicle that has a passenger.
  • Employees involved in an accident must contact the appropriate law enforcement agency, if applicable by law. Employees must also report any motor vehicle accident and/or bodily injury to their manager or other representative of the Company as soon as possible.  Employee and/or employee witnesses may be required to complete the necessary paperwork as required by the Company and applicable insurance carrier.
  • This policy is intended to promote safety. It is not intended to abridge any employee conduct that is both lawful and safe.
